Pastor Richard received his undergraduate degree in Finance and Economics from Minot State University in North Dakota in 2001. He attended and received his Master Divinity from Lutheran Brethren Seminary of Fergus Falls, MN in 2004. In 2013 he obtained a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis MO.

Rev. James May is the director of two organizations, Lutherans in Africa (LIA) and Lutheran Heritage Foundation-Africa (LHF-A).
Pastor May received his undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of Cincinnati in 2000. He also earned university certificates in architecture from the University of Portsmouth (UK), Aristotle University (Thessaloniki, Greece) and Helsinki University of Technology (Finland). He received his Masters of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN in 2006.
Pastor May was called by the Board for Mission Services in the same year to serve the Gourmantche people in Burkina Faso and Togo. In 2009, he was called to serve as the director of LIA and LHF-Africa where he coordinates the translation, publication, and introduction of Confessional Lutheran literature across the continent.
He is married to Tiina (ne. Vesalainen) from Mikkeli, Finland. They have six children.
